Americans are naive if they think they’re actually benefitting from illegal labor. Any potential cost savings are negated by the reduced competition in the industry, as no citizen or permanent resident with options wants to compete with an illegal in manual labor. In the end you get housing that’s just as expensive but worse quality.

This is the true reason middle class Northerners were against slavery during the Civil War. Those who opposed it for moralist/religious reasons were dwarfed by those who knew slavery distorted the market in favor of rich, Southern planters. Just look up the platform of the Free Soil party.

Capitalists should be investing in technological improvements to improve productivity rather than hunting for the cheapest labor. For a modern example, China has heavily automated their manufacturing and are no longer relying purely on slave labor, contrary to western propaganda.
