In the 1960s working hard meant promotions and monetary rewards.

My dad has been at his current job for 12 years and never got a promotion, he has worked 60 hour weeks the whole time. No point in working hard.

Just do what everyone is doing - keep changing companies to get pay increases. Companies don't
invest in their people anymore but get butt hurt when people do not invest in companies.
