Special forces soldiers, and Olympic athletes, are some of the top end of the genetic pool of a given nation. It does seem that Asians and Iranic people disproportionally make up this group of elites, when you consider their small population relative to the "main" indians (Dravidians+Indo Aryan).

When one looks for photos of Indian athletes or special forces members, this is what you get.

NE Indians make up 3.76% of the population, this number is even lower when you account for that not all NE Indians will be mongoloid race.

Over-representation of Northeast Indians in Elite Indian Platforms

Shared Cultural and Historical Foundations

A dozen distinct tribal groups across Assam, Manipur, Nagaland, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh carry centuries-old warrior traditions, where hunting, wrestling and baton-drills were rites of passage. Under British rule, many of these communities were actively recruited into frontier regiments (like the Assam Regiment and Naga Hills Battalion), creating multigenerational soldiering lineages. This legacy instills discipline, esprit de corps and a natural gravitation toward elite military units even today.

Physiological and Environmental Adaptations

High-altitude valleys, dense forests and rugged hills shape bodies primed for endurance, agility and quick-reaction drills. Regular exposure to steep terrain from childhood builds extraordinary lower-body strength and cardiovascular efficiency. Coupled with lean body composition, these attributes translate seamlessly into special-forces training, weight-class sports and combat disciplines.

Socioeconomic Pathways and Aspirations

Limited local industrial opportunities have turned the armed forces and sports academies into clear routes for upward mobility. Central and state governments actively recruit from the Northeast to meet regional representation goals, creating network effects: children of veterans or medal-winners often follow the same paths. Government scholarships, sports quotas and community support further amplify these avenues.

Northeast Indians in the Indian Special Forces

- Deep recruitment ties with Assam Rifles, Gorkha regiments and Indo-Tibetan Border Police cultivate a constant pipeline of candidates.
- Familiarity with jungle warfare and mountain warfare gives an edge in Para SF, MARCOS and NSG selection courses.
- Strong clan-based peer networks instill mutual encouragement to tackle the toughest physical and mental screening.

---

Exceling at the Olympics

Five medal-winning Olympians from the Northeast account for a disproportionately large share of India’s podium finishes:

- Mary Kom (Boxing, Manipur): Bronze medalist at London 2012.
- Dipa Karmakar (Gymnastics, Tripura): First Indian female gymnast at Rio 2016; fourth in vault.
- Lovlina Borgohain (Boxing, Assam): Bronze medalist at Tokyo 2021.
- Mirabai Chanu (Weightlifting, Manipur): Silver medalist at Tokyo 2021.
- Hima Das (Athletics, Assam): Multiple international sprint golds; first Indian woman to win a track event at the IAAF World U20 Championships.

The MMA Upsurge from the Northeast

A grassroots MMA revolution thrives across Nagaland, Assam and Manipur:

- Pioneers like Khriemelie Metha founded The Combat Academy in Nagaland to build local talent from scratch.
- Fighters trained on open fields or makeshift rings, leveraging sheer determination in place of formal gyms.
- Today, regional gyms host trainees from Delhi to abroad, blending local grit with global coaching standards.

Why It Matters

This over-representation reveals how environment, history and social structures converge to produce excellence in extreme-demand fields. Recognizing these factors can inform recruitment strategies, targeted sports investments and community-led training models in other underrepresented regions.

Mountain dwellers all over the world are tough people.

The east asian hillbillies of northeast india, the scottish, afghans, hmong, etc...

Same with altaic speaking tundra or steppe dwellers in northern asia.

The weaklings are the lowland dwellers that live relatively comfortably. Lowland dwellers are also more pacified because civilian rebel armies could not defeat organized armies in flat plains. Whereas mountain dwellers could defeat armies that ventured into the mountains.

Gracile Indid is well...short gracile phenotype but at same time they are more beautiful compared to these phenos

Same when it comes to South Slavs who have athletic and rugged Dinarid compared to northern slavs Neo Danubian or Gorid

Because Nepalis are hard bastards and smart as well so they are good soldiers

I miss my Nepali mate from university. I hope he is doing good and I hope he doesn't hate me for disappearing for 5 years. I want to reconnect one day with my old friends but I don't think they want to with me any more.
