Why long sticks?

Why are long sticks the weapon of choice in the 3rd world? A video always gives away when it's filmed in some low socioeconomic underdeveloped abo exhibit when guys start running in to beat somebody using 5' long wooden poles. Sometimes the target is an animal that wandered into town.

There are often tools in frame, like vehicles or sharp tools hanging on nearby walls. I mean, if you're going to neutralize a bear, it's better to run it over in a van than to chase it down with slappy poles.
