I think in English both terms are fairly well accepted. It's for instance the normal vocable in scientific, military and police organizations, isn't it ?

In French, I'm fairly certain using the equivalent terms in any other context than to designate non-human animals would offend almost everyone.

OP I discussed this to in a thread someone else made with the title lady to refer to a woman.
It's funny how by default women are given the respectful title "lady" while men are described as "dudes" (ie things) not "gentleman".

But what people really mean by "no one" is low status males.
