I get what you mean, but having studied biochemistry, I know it's impossible to actually "cure" it -- like many forms of cancers. If you own a biotech company and it finds a cure for aggressive brain cancer or autism you'll turn from a multi-millionaire into a multi-billionaire (these cures are often done over years and cost several 100'000, keeping people alive will also help your company). There aren't even any pills for autism. Some diseases can be cured but they chose not to and others really can't be (like autism or pancreatic cancer).
 
The massive funding disparity is all downstream from men's biological instinct to provide for and protect women (but to see other men as competitors) and to a lesser extent, women's strong ingroup preference. Basically both genders care about women more than men. Men are disposable, water is wet.

Anyway, curing autism is probably next to impossible. I can see there being something to prevent a baby being born with autism, or maybe a procedure/treatment/medication that could be done when they're still a child to steer brain development in the right direction. But to completely rewire an autistic adult's brain?...yeah that would require complex nanomachines or some other technology that will remain a science fiction concept for a very long time.

Same thing goes for low IQ, sociopathy, or anything else based on how your brain is hardwired.

Yeah another good counterpoint is that breast cancer has gotten a tremendous amount of funding, yet it hasn't been cured either.

I can see the appeal of the "they don't cure it because treatments are more profitable than cures" argument, because it kinda sounds like it makes sense, but if you look a little closer you can see the plot holes. I've heard the argument that big pharma actively holds back research for cures basically mafia style. I mean I get they're a powerful industry with lobbyists and can get politicians to do their bidding, I can see all that. But then you'd have to explain why China doesn't just cure these things. The CCP has absolute power in China, and they wouldn't hesitate to remove diseases and mental disorders from their population. They have the labs, the funds, and the talent....so why don't they?

The reality is some things are next to impossible. Completely rewiring an adults brain to make it function a certain way (which would be required to cure autism) is one of those things. I think the most realistic scenario is there will be a vaccine that prevents autism that will be given to infants, and then autism will just be eradicated from the population over time as the generations that were born before the vaccine start dying off. Sort of like what happened with polio, though unlike polio, there's a genetic component to autism, so it might not be that simple. Maybe the vaccine could blunt the expression of certain genes, but this stuff is way above my paygrade as a burger flipper.

Anyway I think the best thing that can be done to truly solve problems like cancer, autism, low IQ, sociopathy is advance AI as much as possible as quickly as possible. Create AI capable of recursive self improvement, AI becomes super intelligent, super intelligent AI figures out how to truly fix these problem. It seems like they're impossibly difficult for humans to solve, but it doesn't sound like curing them would require you to violate the laws of physics, so super intelligent AI could probably do it.

That does make sense, well said. Personally I think this will take several decades until we reach this point, maybe even 60+ years (once AI is better and makes less mistakes) but what do I know. At the moment for example we can't cure paraplegic patients (the ones who broke their spinal cord) so that they can walk again, because the central nervous system just doesn't regenerate the ways other tissue does. Like your skin heals, bones heal, but spinal neurons idk.

And even if we could somehow get them to regrow, they'd have to find their way back to the exact right connections out of millions of possibilities. The wiring is insanely precise. It's known what has to be done in theory but that's all (like in theory we could travel to Mars and back but no current rocket is capable of that).

Like you said hopefully AI changes that eventually, but yeah, I'm not holding my breath for it happening in the next 3 decades at least (but again obviously I don't know it's just what I think from what I know).
