Even if you planned this well. The tens of thousands if not millions of years it would take for any worthwhile land to form from this process wouldn't be considered economically viable. There's plenty of unused land on pretty much every continent as is.

Terraforming is possible. But the idea that we can just go to mars and get it done is retarded. It will take longer than humans have even been recording their own history, if not longer than humans have even been around to start seeing anything noticeable.
The biggest threat I see to mars colonization is the isolation factor. All it takes is for one of them to lose it and just fuck everything up and then everythings back to square one. Good luck sustaining that for tens of thousands of years without something going wrong at the hands of someone. We cant even achieve that on earth for more than a week.

Terraforming is a waste of time and resources when much cheaper alternatives are available. O'Neill cylinders are much more economical even if they are less flashy spectacles. Altering an entire planet's geology and atmospherics is not worth the effort considering the relatively lackluster return on your investment.
