I have a lot of rotting food around me, could this cause my room to smell like vinegar?
I have a lot of rotting food around me
Thank youA strong vinegar smell in someone’s room can come from several different things — some harmless, some not so great. If the person also says there’s rotting food, that’s actually a big clue.
Here are the most common causes:
⸻
1. Rotting food / food waste
When food decomposes, bacteria produce acetic acid, which is literally the acid that makes vinegar smell like vinegar.
Foods most likely to produce a vinegar smell when rotting:
• Fruit
• Juice
• Soda
• Bread
• Rice
• Pasta
• Potatoes
• Anything sugary or starchy
Rotting fruit in particular can smell exactly like vinegar because fermentation turns sugars into alcohol and then into acetic acid.
So if someone has:
• Old cups
• Old plates
• Food containers
• Trash bags
• Spilled soda
• Forgotten takeout
• Fruit flies present
Then rotting food is very likely the cause.
⸻
2. Mold and bacteria
Some molds and bacteria produce acidic smells that people describe as:
• Vinegar
• Sour
• Pickle smell
• Musty + vinegar
• Feet + vinegar
This can come from:
• Wet carpet
• Dirty laundry
• Damp mattress
• Mold in walls
• Old food under bed
• Trash cans
• Spilled drinks
⸻
3. Dirty laundry / body odor
This surprises people, but:
Sweat bacteria can produce acetic acid, which smells like vinegar.
Common sources:
• Dirty socks
• Towels
• Bedding
• Clothes piled up
• Shoes
• Mattress
A room with lots of dirty laundry can smell very vinegar-like.
⸻
4. Cleaning with vinegar
Some people clean with white vinegar:
• Floors
• Laundry
• Mold
• Cat urine
• Surfaces
If they recently cleaned, the smell can linger.
⸻
5. Urine (human or animal)
Old urine — especially cat urine — can sometimes smell like:
• Ammonia
• Vinegar
• Sour / acidic
If someone is not cleaning regularly, this can absolutely cause the smell.
⸻
If I had to rank most likely causes:
1. Rotting food / cups / trash
2. Dirty laundry / bedding
3. Mold / damp carpet
4. Old urine
5. Cleaning vinegar
If the person literally said they have a lot of rotting food, then that is almost certainly the source. Fermenting food produces acetic acid → vinegar smell.
⸻
Quick test they can do
Tell them to:
• Throw away all food
• Take out trash
• Wash bedding
• Wash clothes
• Open windows
• Vacuum
• Smell mattress and carpet
• Check under bed and desk
• Look for old cups with liquid
If smell disappears → it was food or laundry
If smell remains → mold, carpet, mattress, or urine source
⸻
If you want, I can also tell you what different room smells usually indicate (musty, sweet, ammonia, fishy, etc.).
Wow interestingMy BO smeels like vinegar, funnily enough.
When I'm out walking for a long time and my clothes get soaked with sweat, they smell all vinegary
