Because they're perceived as less of a threat. An ogre with no neck and traps up to the back of his skull who looks like he could strangle you with one hand doesn't look quite as affable and genial as the pudgy guy who looks more likely to feed your puppy than kill it.
It's the same with ugly dudes vs good looking dudes around a man's mate. The chad with a jaw that could jam radars is perceived as more of a threat than the fat guy, pimple-faced guy.
