Technically you're right, but in the rest of world they legit do it to sustain the family (Definitely the case for East Europe, most of Asia, most of Africa). Personally, I'd only allow women in the workforce after the child/ren reach the age of 5. Until then, they should ONLY work part-time at most.
It's the same reason why mass-immigration needs to happen: to increase the labor pool and decrease wages.

The current system is prone to collapse given the inevitable rise of automation. It'll be interesting to see what direction most societies will take (Funnily enough, Japan might adapt best - no immigrants => Stable welfare state + Higher living standards for those who work)
