We question the reported number because
A. all of the death camps where in soviet territory which they have admitted to lying about atrocities and blaming it on the Germans on other occasions. look up the Katlyn massacre
B. all of the camps on our side where checked by the red cross and most of the few deaths their where, where either by typhus which zyklon B aka the thing they "gassed the jews" with is a delousing agent for or by starvation from the German supply lines being cut off by allied bombing so they couldn't get food in the camps.
C. Despite the allies having air superiority over Germany towards the end of the war and taking millions of pictures of German military installations including the camps they did not once find any evidence of genocide or mass burial grounds. They would even destroy the supply lines going into the camp or do strafing runs believing they where military complex's which lead to starvation and mass typhus out breaks in the camps which can be seen in the photos when the allies entered the camps.
D. there where next to no mass graves found at the camps that even come close to the 3 million reported deaths (other 3 million coming from einsatzgruppen and SS squads dealing with partisans in the east iirc, even though many of the "massacres" caused by them where intentionally done by the soviets and where later admitted to) and the claim that all of the bones had been destroyed by a few ovens which are no where as close to the power of modern ovens over the course of 5 years is literally impossible
E. The soviets even added fake chimneys that weren't even attached to air raid shelters to make them look like gas chambers for propaganda photos
There are some more things like wooden doors that lock from the inside holding people in the chamber, people admitting they made up stories about their time in the camps for documentaries or movies, how the global population of jews remained mostly unchanged and even grew post war or how they made similar claims of genocide during the first world war, ect.
pretty much the camps where nothing more then interment camps like what American's used against Japanese citizens and there where plans to relocate the jews after the war to places like Madagascar.
I'm sure @BummerDrummer can elaborate with better evidence and understanding.
