Why do people self cut?

I know the physical pain is supposed to be a distraction from the mental pain, but still. Why not just punch something hard until your hands bleed, feels a lot better than being cut.

It gives me something concrete to focus on instead of what is going on in my head, and I have grown to like the sensation itself.
