For the same reason this happened to gaming or any other “nerdy” community. Normies make fun of a smaller group that they don’t understand in order to fit in. Thing then becomes bigger as people realize it’s good and then those same normies start engaging in it to look cool and fit in. This always happens with a fanbase.
