It's the same thing as wearing a corset, foot binding, or any number of other uncomfortable things women have done for the sake of fashion over the centuries. It's just a modern version of it.
It's not really any different than getting a nose job or breast implants. Being more attractive gives women an edge over other women, particularly in male dominated societies.
If two women of equal skill apply for a job, generally the better looking one will get the job.
In many cases a better looking woman will get a job over a more qualified less attractive woman.
That's exactly what is going on here. The surgery makes the women more attractive according to the beauty standards of the society they live in, and thus gives them an advantage over other women in their fields."
