Serious Why did Marvel/Disney hire such an UGLY woman for Captain Marvel??

This is a very serious question. It is my observation that Marvel/Disney tends to cast both exceptionally looking and mediocre but charismatic people in their lead roles.

Eg.
Exceptional - Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, the kid playing Spiderman (I'd kill for that face), Scarlet Jo (though she's post prime), Michael B Jordan
Charismatic - Robert Downey, Benedict Cumberbatch, the guy who plays Loki, Black Panther

What I can't understand for the life of me is why they picked such an ugly woman to play Captain Marvel:

She's like 5/10 max.

Hollywood is full of hot chicks. This is their ONLY SUPERPOWERED WOMAN of significance going forward. Why someone so mediocre?

Is it meant to be someone "accessible" so that normie women won't feel "threatened"?

When I was 10 years old me and my buddy used to trade comics at lunch and after school we'd go to the comic book store sometimes to hang out. Often my mom would take me as well. I spent years reading X-Men, Spiderman, Venom, the Death of Superman, etc. That was in the early 90s.

Now that technology has advanced sufficiently to bring these stories to life and they're putting hundreds of millions of dollars of FX into each one to do that, how would I NOT watch them?

My childhood was one of the happiest times of my life. By 12/13 and up things started going to shit. I still remember that.
