It's not just because they're ideologically driven, or because they're pandering to popular opinion. It's because certain laws established during the civil rights movement ensure that if a company hires based on merit alone they'll be penalized for discrimination because the barrier of entry is too high for women and niggers.
Look up
disparate impact. It's a law that makes it so that if some kind of test or barrier filters out a minority by virtue of that minority being too dumb, the company will be punished and open to lawsuit from said stupid minority.

This is why DEI exists to the extent it does. This is why so many useless jobs exist for women.
These companies are terrified of being sued. Yes, there's ideological motivation. However, a good deal of the motivation is fear of lawsuit.

Any opposition to DEI is completely meaningless untill this problem is addressed. Unfortunately, I doubt it will because the fairy tale of natural equality and systemic inequality is so strong that removing any form of equity is seen as horribly racist.
