It was a very insidious move to re-label politeness as being a sort of false niceness. Of course there are people who's politeness is only for show, those people can be derogatorily called "nice guys"; but being polite to others shouldn't have a stigma associated with it, that's just stupid.

its pretty much a no-win situation, that's why you should just act in whatever way feels natural, it won't change your outcome but it will be positively less mentally exhausting.
