Large amount of media originating from there even before anime went completely mainstream + at least some types of people are fascinated by the concept of a non-white country that's modern and West-tier despite not being a white Western country, and for a long time Japan was the only country like that.
Weebs definitely existed pre-2020 but they were more niche. Anime was slowly creeping into the mainstream ever since shows like Attack on Titan, One Punch Man, and Sword Art Online were released on streaming services, but the lockdown played the biggest role in accelerating it.

In regards to their actions during WW2, the barbarism is less what I have an issue with compared to the slave-like devotion to the Emperor. The expectation was to kill or die for him at all costs, leading to shit like Kamikaze. It’s like Islamist suicide bombing but without the promise of paradise. While I acknowledge hierarchy being natural and respect it, that extreme level of top-down rule enforcement is subhuman (though essential for certain populations)

I always found Japan to be a semi-cyberpunk shithole. Most of their inhabitants definitely don't have a West-tier lifestyle. They do have West-tier Infras tho, but that's also true for China and Korea. I think Japan just aesthetic-mogs (in media).
Westerners usually get a rude awakening after they settle there. I think it's not even about Japan. Only if you're a wealthy and private person can you afford the time to adapt to a foreign culture. Otherwise, you’re just gonna be miserable.
