Who it is directly marketed towards:
Anime manga's intended audience (mainstream shonen less so, but especially some of the niche genres) is Japanese otaku, who are often neuroatypical and societal rejects. They certainly are the ones who spend the most money on figures, BDs, volumes, etc., so the creators (and the creators often are otaku themselves) have to pander to them. Anime/manga is pretty much tailor-made for losers, because if it weren't, it would make less profit.
Escapism:
The art style leads anime to not being like real life. They do not feature 3d, so in that sense they aren't real life. Second, anime and manga don't often deal with realistic or even plausible scenarios-fantasy and sci-fi is probably the most popular genres. Third, anime creators seem to have no qualms having fictional entertainment be fictional, whereas western media often injects "realism" taking away from the fantasy.
Lack of feminist and Marxist influence:
It's pretty obvious that Japan has not been influenced by feminism in the same way the west has. Gender roles are well estsblished in anime(which feminists hate) as well as there being no racial diversity, no fat acceptance, and other things commonplace in western media. Anime also has a strong sense of hiererarchy.
It's moe:
2d girls are cute, but in western media females are all made to be uglified, by design. There is no "pure" or "sacred" in western media.

Just as a way to prove this, you can just look through the currently airing American TV, then for comparison, look at all the anime currently airing. It is really obvious that way.
It's hard to put down exactly why anime is such a better cope than western media, because it's more like an entirely different way of thinking than just a couple superficial differences in plot and artstyle.
