how does one attain happiness?
Why do you focus on happiness? When you bow down to the ecstasy of the sublime the experience is revealing, but you cannot stay state for too long.
So the answer is, no one knows, really. It has to work for you and what you want.

Why do you focus on happiness?
Well, what's the alternative?

I can view myself as a biological machine that has been designed, by natural selection, to perpetuate my genes, and I can view myself as a specific instantiation of such a machine by a specific set of genes in the hopes that this machine will succeed in sending the genes into the future...

It's a bit like viewing an airplane as a machine designed to fly, and a specific airplane (say for example, The Spirit of St Louis) as an instantiation of an airplane for a specific purpose (crossing the Atlantic) ... but then, if it turns out the airplane will never fly, let alone cross the Atlantic, and you've chosen to view it that way, the obvious conclusion is that you should scrap it.

...so, what's the alternative? What other value does it have?

In addition to being a biological machine, I am also a conscious being. Given that viewing myself as a biological machine leads inexorably to the conclusion that I should rope, I must focus on this other aspect of myself.

What's the purpose of consciousness? There isn't one. Consciousness is "subjective experience" - it just experiences is the world. But experiences can be good or bad. A good experience is happiness. You ask why I focus on that - there's your answer.

To be clear, I have no expectation that I should be happy 24/7. But I think it's reasonable to make an effort to attain it occasionally. How do I go about that?

Go monk and shift your expectations. That has always been the way for those intelligen enough to not be cucks. Change yourself because the world won’t for you. The notion that we only exist to fuck is animalistic and feminine. We are much more than that. We have to because no one else will, for anyone.

Now for the short-term happiness, how bad are your looks/10? If you are young you will ascend. Looksmaxx or die trying. I’m in that state as of now.

Seeing life as a “bad experience” is also the norm for many people as well. It means nothing besides the value we give to it.
