They do have better trained and better equipped soldiers. Pound for pound, the US soldier is probably the best in the world. The Chinese have greater numbers in their army, though (and arguably better brainwashed soldiers), and in an average firefight having more guns shooting usually is the advantage, since the average firefight has a very high bullets fired:bullets hit ratio. More bullets fired in the general direction => increased chances of hitting some target.
