From my understanding, political systems can be categorized by the relationships between the 4 estates; warriors, clergymen, merchants, and peasants. For example, monarchism is rule by a warrior elite with support from the clergy, whereas liberal democracy is the overthrow of the two by the mercantile third estate with the support of the peasant rabble. Perhaps you could say that the media is the liberal counterpart of clergymen.
If so, who was the ruling class in Communist states?
It can't be the peasants because the "democracy" or the "dictatorship of the proletariat" developed into an oligarchy by party members.
And it can't be the merchants either although obviously communism was and is a useful tool for them and are indeed communist in a “social” sense.
IMO it was a theocracy run by a Marxist clergy, but I would appreciate your answers and feedback, especially recommendations of sources like books, thanks.
