It's an interesting subject and I'm not entirely sure. I think it's a number of things. The Japan situation is probably where we can get most of our understanding of the phenomenon since they appear to be ahead of the curve by a few decades. Why?

- High degree of university educations (which require deferring "relationship" goals) required for work.
- Tight space.
- Poor opportunities to get your own place and establish independence.
- More technologically advanced - they were into online communities and messaging faster than the west was.
What happened to them really suggests there is more to it than solely hypergamy and sex. It brings to mind the rat utopia experiments:

What criteria is being judged to determine happiness, that's a huge factor to the results of a study, because a woman could literally respond and mean that she is happy, not even knowing that her response is being tabulated as "unhappy", because she did not meet the criteria that they are assuming SHOULD make a woman happy

If my criteria for long term is 1 year + and her's is 3 months, by default she hasn't had any long term relationships
If my criteria for her being "happy" is related to how many long term relationships she's had, I'd tabulate her answers as her being unhappy
