Self-explanatory, lol
To me 10 was much better than 7 any day. 2017-2021 range speciallyI have only used 10 and 11. and 10 was the best one imo
I have Linux on my laptop and I have a Chromebook.
but back in the day I used to install windows 2000 on everything.
what do you run? i usually use ubuntu but rn i have mintYeah I use Linux too at the moment.
I find Windows 10 and 11 a real pain.
I really liked 7 and even 8.1 though.
Vista because everyone seems to hate it - something I can empathise with.

whatever the default is. Gnome probably?Mint MATE. I like it!
What desktop do you use?
I like 10

I'm just a fan of the bash shell
actually I had windows 10 at one point with the Linux subsystem in it that had a bash shell that wasn't too bad.
XP doesn’t have the search bar, which 7 introduced. 7 is the best aesthetically and functionally. 10 is bloated trash and I will comment on 11 when I build a new PC
For me, part of the fun is figuring it out. troubleshooting, and doing things that Microsoft wouldn't want you to (like debloating and optimizing it) tbh lol. It's why I have it on my main machine and I only use Linux on my laptop. That's brave of you to try 11 when you disliked 10 so much!
And yeah I felt that 10 was doing a lot more under the hood too. I think if you installed 7, 8.1 and 10 on the same low spec hardware then the biggest performance difference would be 10 running significantly slower.
And 11 wouldn't run at all!

XP, if I could still use it for games and functionality with new hardware, I would be.
I got Windows 10 at release, and that's been nearly 10 years now. Shit, time flies.
As long as games run on W10, or if using the web becomes a pain which would probably come far later. I don't care about security updates and such.Yah it's been a while!
How long do you think you'll stay on it? As I know it doesn't have that much longer to go.
For Windows 7, there's was a bug in system32 that can let you gain administrative access to the computer.

No but it happened to my high school library computersAh but did it happen to you?
No but it happened to my high school library computers.
Window 98
Cinnamon is the default I think which is built on Gnome 3.
MATE is built on Gnome 2 and XFCE (the third official option)... hm. It's a lightweight desktop that I don't think is based on any other.
What do you mean by a Linux subsystem? The only way I know to run Windows on Linux is with a virtual machine.

Install WSL
Install Windows Subsystem for Linux with the command, wsl --install. Use a Bash terminal on your Windows machine run by your preferred Linux distribution - Ubuntu, Debian, SUSE, Kali, Fedora, Pengwin, Alpine, and more are available.learn.microsoft.com
you have to "install" it, but it works out pretty well. no VM or dual boot needed.
I meant that everyone hates Windows Vista, and everyone hates me too. Ergo, I like Windows Vista because it reminds me of myself (in a weird way).I think it's fine. A bit buggy but other than that fine.
8 was unintuitive to use on a desktop, but 8.1 was pretty good.
Me was apparently really buggy.
Oh cool OK ^^
I thought you mean the other way around lol
It doesn't surprise me too much that Linux is flexible enough to work in all kinds of unusual ways ^_^
win 10 as long as it doesn't get in the way is quite usable
i just use winutil on every install, worked well so far. And yet, some "features" cannot be removed completely, like this crappy news feed in the task barI did find that with some tweaks here and there I could make it mostly leave me alone.
I think the biggest issue is that MS seem intent on going down this route of making Windows more and more restrictive and controlling.
More and more like your PC is just a terminal for their services and less like your own computer.
So... hm. Hopefully that will change but I don't see any major signs of it at the moment.
