Something to understand is the USA doesn't care if Russia gets SE Ukraine.. the 20% of Ukraine's area and 20% of Ukraine's population where the Russians are now. Why doesn't the USA care. Its because a lot of that area was already separatist republics before the war anyway, and Russia has a lot of support in those areas because of ethnic Russians there. And the Russian army is already there. Why worry about 20% of Ukraine that is problematic.. if America could get the other 80% of Ukraine now. Thing is Americans are businessmen, so this is the way we think.

You see Donetsk province how Russia still has a ways to go to get to the borders of it. Thats sort of the minimum war aims where Russia could reasonably claim victory and halt offensive operations.
What about Kherson province. Even though the area to the NW of the Dnieper River sides with Russia, it wasn't sustainable to hold it for Russia, its too hard to defend because they don't have operational depth there with the river. And the Ukrainians didn't want Russia with that large foothold west of the river, as Russia could then launch more offensives from there in the future.
What about northern Zaporizhia provinces. The north of the province its too Ukrainian culturally. There is a large city in the north of this province, Zaporizhia city with ~710,000 people, that in addition to being large it is easy for the Ukrainians to keep reinforcing.
With Luhansk province the Russians already have 98% or so of it.

This great current map at this link really shows what is going on in the Donbass with the war. Why the big fight is at Bakhmut now, as Russia works to take control of Donetsk province to its borders.
