I have never paid for anime. I do however have a small manga collection, to which my latest addition is D-Frag Vol. 11.

If your primary interest is in supporting the creators, is it better to buy localized products, or have originals imported by a service like kinokuniya? I would guess a higher percentage of your money would end up in the creator's pocket if you were to do the latter.
I would like to own something readable, but in the wonderful age of internet piracy, it doesn't really matter whether or not you can read your physical copy, because you can read everything online anyway.
You could also forgo buying physical BDs and volumes, instead buying merchandise and figures. These do not require an understanding of Japanese to utilize, and more of your money would end up in the creator's pocket than if you were to buy a localized BD or paperback manga.

I recently bought boku no hero volume 13. I have some monster manga as well but not all of it. Never used money on anime either. I don't really care enough about supporting the creators to worry about what the best ways of doing so are, but maybe it's because I'm not yet that involved in the whole anime community thing.

I didn't care until recently either. I had the realization that anime doesn't exist unless someone pays for it, so maybe I should do my part and buy a few things to support the industry, because I don't want anime to disappear.

I'm poor though, so my habits aren't likely to change. It's just something interesting to think about.

I don't know if this counts but I bought a couple of neptunia merchs like the plushie keychain and some stickers.

I don't read at all.
The last time I read a manga was online when I was reading inuyashiki and that was because the plot really intrigued me.

I bought the first few volumes for the light novel for re:zero, danmachi and oregairu right when it got localized and have a mini collection back at home have 1 volume of owari no seraph and the first 2 volumes of Vinland saga and first volume of vagabond.

Don’t want to get into collecting because I just read fan translations and they come out much quicker

Don’t have any BD but I’m ordering Fate/stay night heavens feel once the trilogy is done and almost ordered an okita souji figma but cancelled when the shipping was $40

I bought a couple series and movies I really liked, on blu ray. I think they were steins gate, elfen lied, princess mononoke, akira, and spice and wolf. Also bought a couple of used manga books, maybe 3 or 4. Then I bought the japanese manga set for elfen lied for a hundred dollars. Haven't bought any others since then

Yeah, it sucks wanting to buy an entire manga series but not having the money for it. Reading it online isnt the same :feelsrope:

I pay 99 cent a month for a manga reader on my phone

Literally never paid for anime, and I have over 300 of them logged. I've bought like 5 volumes of manga in total, but read over 100.

Buy a Kindle Oasis like me. It looks just like real paper, is infinitely superior to reading on your phone or computer and you'll come out saving money down the line if you read a lot of manga but don't want to buy them. It's only marginally worse than physical manga, you can't have color and full size spreads.

Okay, I usually don't preach, but I know you sometimes write threads about anticonsumerism and other stuff I agree with. I am usually to tired to give you an answer you deserve or I am to insecure. So here is my honest recommendation.

Don't buy stuff. 50% goes to production, distribution, etc. directly. In case of location even more (most of this does not go to the translators or lectors) and merch doesn't even cut it in any way. In case of bought e-books the publishers simply pocket the 50%.

Most authors don't get more than 10 to 20% of the purchase price in general. I have some insight through acquaintances' and my own work (No mangas. Can't go into details.)

We need independent global only cost-covering distribution networks combined with crowd funding for each kind of media or art to avoid market consolidation, manipulation and the publisher mafia. Patreon is a start, but still a private company leeching off the work of artists.

Try to support artists directly via paypal or better services (for the moment) like transferwise or cryptocurrency to break the banks' and credit card companies' ursury monopol. Sending money is basically costfree today. Buying stuff you don't need is stupid and has a negative impact on the enviroment.
Try to contact the authors directly and recommend to setup a donation section on their contact sites or make them give you their bank adress and do a big one time donation for everything you plan to ever buy.

Chances are they just say "Buy stuff.", because they don't see through this and they feel the situation does not directly effect them ("I got my share and I am satisfied with what I have."), but it does through cementing income equality and draining off value of done labor out of the system i.e. money (the equivalent of all money in the system is the total of all work done) to people who do no real work or wouldn't need those obscene amount sof money, while we have huge global problems at the same time, who need to be urgently financially adressed.

This is an all encompassing problem of today's economy within every industry that works with intellectual property.

I bought a light novel that an anime was based on a couple yrs back. I use to purchase dvd collection of a couple of series i watched, titles like GiTS. I dont purchase any of that stuff anymore because its shit cope and its over.

I had a crunchyroll subscription that was active for half a year without me knowing it. It took so much money from me and I never used it

Never.

Japanese people hate filthy gaijins and I don't care about supporting them or their ugly people.

Crunchyroll and all those other gay ass streaming sites are terrible services that don't deserve support.

Never. Crunchyroll is just another SJW cancer company.

Thank you for the advice. I'll try to support the creators directly whenever possible.
