Perhaps you could also add that you might have eaten somehtng that is bad and that you are not feeling well and therefore you have to leave the party. If it is not a party, then it is some other event. My point is not about the party and the setting, it is about the situation. You might find yourself in a similar situation, not at a party, but somewhere else with a similar situation. This is how to avoid it.
My guess is he most likely has been caught off-guard by it and was shocked to his core. This would explain why his friend described him that way, that he looked utterly defeated and as pale as a ghost. And again, he is right about it. This is how utter defeat looks like. He was most likely caught by it off-guard, he did not even know how to react to it.
