Survival, reproduction, social success.
These are the things we're biologically programmed to pursue. Modern society is unnatural. We're not allowed to satisfy our instincts such as hunting and killing animals. Instead we have to work these unnatural and repetitive jobs for tickets that we can exchange for food.
In the past would reproduce for resources due to their own physical weakness. Now, society gives them equity jobs due to the excess resources available. These equity jobs give them an advantage over the average man and ensure birth rates decrease. Since we're unable to reproduce with women we have to simulate reproduction via pornography and hentai.
We can't satisfy our violent desires because the government has monopolized violence so we have to satisfy them with video games.
Modern society is a prison.
When you think about it, we as humans aren’t truly as sentient as we like to believe.
We follow complex patterns that seem broad and differing, yet truly isn’t when we break it down. Despite that, when we deviate from those patterns, we are punished via emotional turmoil and frustrations. As a social species, we hardly think independently either and typically thrive off echo-chambers as well as conformity, driving out those that do not conform with the group’s status quo; almost ‘treating’ the error, as biologically or culturally speaking (which eventually links back to biological reasons) they are seen as such.
Even when I try to look at on an individual level, individuality in itself is only a reflection of culture, media and random sorting of genetic information. Practically most thoughts are built off external factors like trauma or societal teachings, and you can see that clearly not just in history but in how culture and environment between countries/continents creates vastly different moral structures/ values within people.
Even our own thoughts are hardly decided by ‘us’, with it mostly being subconscious; I remember reading an interesting article that states the human mind can decide decisions up to 10 seconds prior to actually thinking it consciously and being AWARE of that. Even our belief systems are mostly built on emotion that we would have to justify afterwards, like how the ultimate conundrum between Liberalism and Conservatism isn’t truly the policies that divide people but how much of a humanitarian an individual is. People argue that love, morals and goals somehow proves we have free will, yet no-one really questions WHERE they came from? Its just hardwired into the individual.
We are practically biological robots machines that tries to simulate free will but only partially succeeds; our intelligence only being a happy accident in terms of evolution, I genuinely believe humanity might’ve accidentally stunted itself early on in the chain.
