An authoritarian personality describes a person with a strong tendency for obedience, strict adherence to conventional values, and submission to authority figures, coupled with aggression or prejudice towards those seen as inferior. Developed by Adorno and colleagues after WWII to explain fascism, this personality type thrives on order, tradition, and hierarchy, often stemming from harsh, punitive childhoods where love was conditional, leading to displaced hostility onto scapegoats.
Core Characteristics
Submission to Authority: Unquestioning respect and obedience to leaders and established power.
Conventionalism: Strong adherence to traditional norms, values, and social structures, resisting change.
Aggression/Prejudice: Hostility, contempt, or prejudice directed at those perceived as different, weak, or outside their in-group (outsiders, minorities).
Rigid Thinking: Black-and-white, inflexible thinking; sees the world in absolute terms.
Anti-Intellectualism: Disdain for abstract thinking or unconventional ideas (e.g., artists, writers).
Need for Order: A strong desire for security, structure, and clear social hierarchies.
Origins (Psychodynamic Theory)
Harsh Parenting: Children raised with strict discipline, high standards, conditional love, and severe criticism.
Repressed Hostility: Anger and resentment towards parents are repressed due to fear.
Displacement: This repressed hostility is then displaced onto weaker, more vulnerable groups (scapegoating).
