IMO: best distractions are vidya, politics and technology; best copes are philosophy and science.

why is fapping not on the list? The most obvious cope missing. I used to fap several times a day from age 14 to age 30. Only the last year have I tried to quit it. I am on nofap hard mode for a month already.

I mean I understand the ups and downs of fapping. It's mostly downs, you'll realize sooner or later, maybe much later.
 
Studycelling, but only because I feel at least an inkling of accomplishment at the end. So that's a decent "productive" cope (the actual productive value may be somewhat illusory, depending on one's viewpoint)

But in terms of distractive copes, I do all the normal video games, anime watching, drinking/eating light snacks, and fapping.

The key is to not fap too much, limit yourself to once a day or once every couple of days. It feels a lot better. But if you're talking about it reducing your energy, I know. That's kind of a plus for me as I just like to LDAR and sleep a lot.

Past copes: Politics, ideology and philosophy. I feel like I have learnt everything important and have a Weltanschuung I am happy with. Politics bore me at this point. But they were huge when I was younger and everybody should go through this stage.

I notice I have been shifting quite strongly from playing vidya to listening to music when my depression was growing.
 
The feeling after studying is amazing, you feel like you've been productive and it kind of makes you proud. But the time you spend on studying does not even feel good, but it is still a good cope.
Video games are by far the best cope if you're basically addicted to the game. It's even better than porn and fapping if the game is addictive.
For some reason I don't enjoy playing video games anymore, so my best cope now are YouTube videos about travelling and stuff like that. It makes me daydream, I imagine living a life where I am carefree, just travelling the world etc. -> good cope

Without games/tv/books/art the crime/drug/drinking/suicude rates might be higher.
 
I have various copes including most from that list, but I think food/drink is the biggest one. Like ER wisely said, if I can't have sex with attractive foids, let me at least have some delicious food.
