There’s still kind of an audience for it, the “alt” subculture exists among zoomers and gen A as basically a bastardized mix of alternative subcultures from previous decades. But I do hear that most “alt” people are only really alternative in dress and listen primarily to mainstream music.
Wouldn’t be surprised if barriers to entry were a huge part of the reason that culture’s popularity waned over time.

Nig culture was also somewhat linked to anime’s mainstreaming in the sense that it went full mainstream around the same time you saw Soundcloud rappers and some really famous people like Kanye and Michael B.
