Sportsball is still much bigger, and in general, it pulls in more money and fans. But mainstream anime such as the shonen (action) genre of anime has become extremely popular with a lot of normies. Even if it is only superficial for them and they only like the "aesthetic" or the fighting scenes, it is still gaining popularity with them. It is still funny though, that less than 10 years ago, they would have called (and did) people like us degenerate weeaboos for even mentioning anime at all.
