When
male sea otters reach sexual maturity, they will rape seal pups if there aren’t enough female seals to compete for. In sea otter culture, too, this happens quite a lot. More alpha males will exclude the weaker males from the females, essentially abandoning them from the pack. When this happens, the weaker males become more desperate for a mate and thus more aggressive.
The worst part of it is that an integral part of
sea otter rape culture is holding the victim under water for about an hour (yes, this is because they are accustomed to the vicious mating refusal from the female sea otters). However, this behavior, unfortunately, drowns the infant seals. Granted, it also drowns about 1 in 10 of the female sea otters as well.
