Saw ton of Americans both in Thailand and other SEA places. They usually cope drinking and using cheap hookers - some of them start a small business to fill time or just help locals here and there a bit - far better than spending time alone with a dog, in a chronically depressed state.
There's plenty of copes available if you have money and time. I'm 38 but I feel much better than when I was 18 or 28. I guess you can get used to anything.
