Is it the same as avoidant personality disorder, all I know about it is that it is someone who lacks close relationships and the majority who suffer from it are men

It is when you aren't interested in social interaction and normie bullshit

According to Wikipedia it's very rare only 0.8% of people suffer from it

No they are not the same. True schizoids genuinely do not desire intimacy, they are basically asexual. They are genuinely content being wizard hermits who don't form emotional connections with anyone. Schizoid would be more associated with "autistic" traits than avoidant PD. In contrast, those with avoidant personality crave intimacy but are too afraid of rejection to take steps to fulfill their desires. People here often erroneously label themselves as shizoid when they are in fact avoidant.

To go further, see the diagnostic criteria for schizoid in the DSM, the manual shrinks use to diagnose people
Schizoid DSM

The first three criteria already indicate volceldom rather than inceldom "Neither desires nor enjoys close relationships," "Has little, if any, interest in having sexual experiences" etc etc. So, yes, it's a much different psychological profile than avoidant PD
