I am not American and I don’t know the ins and outs of the US political system but I assume abortion will only be fully and completely banned in some states.

There have certainly been places and times where reactionary forces have full out one and defeated progressive forces; just compare Egypt or Iran in the 70s to Egypt and Iran today. Both of those countries have become radically more religious and sexually conservative in the last few decades.

The west has, however, become more and more socially progressive every decade since WW2. The economic left wing and Union power got beaten in the Anglosphere in the 80s with Thatcher and Reagan but the left kept winning on cultural issues.
