First the Bible states that there is Retribution and reward and in Daniel 12:2 this is explained.

"And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt."

Next and foremost is that all things will be restored new.

Here is Revelation chapter 21 (ESV) on the restoration of the Garden of Eden (Eden means pleasure).

The New Heaven and the New Earth

21 "Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. 2 And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place[a] of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. 4 He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away."

There will be a new heaven and a new Earth.

Before the full restoration there will be a thousand year reign of Jesus Christ where Satan and his armies will be temporarily imprisoned for a thousand years.

Revelation 20 (ESV)

20 "Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, holding in his hand the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain. 2 And he seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years, 3 and threw him into the pit, and shut it and sealed it over him, so that he might not deceive the nations any longer, until the thousand years were ended. After that he must be released for a little while."

There will 1000 years of peace and prosperity and at the end man will decide for one final time to choose God or choose their own way which is also Satan's!

Here is Revelation 20:7-10 (ESV)

7 "And when the thousand years are ended, Satan will be released from his prison 8 and will come out to deceive the nations that are at the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them for battle; their number is like the sand of the sea. 9 And they marched up over the broad plain of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city, but fire came down from heaven[b] and consumed them, 10 and the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever."

After this final battle comes final Judgement and the full merger of heaven and earth in a New Eden!

What does the Bible say on punishment?

Here is Revelation 20:11-15

11 "Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. From his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them. 12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done. 13 And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done. 14 Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. 15 And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire."

Where do the dead go to await final judgement?

Here is Luke 16:19-23

19 “There was a rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. 20 And at his gate was laid a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, 21 who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man's table. Moreover, even the dogs came and licked his sores. 22 The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham's side. The rich man also died and was buried, 23 and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side."

So those who die with God go to Abrahams bosom to await their new bodies for the new Eden and those who die without God go to sh'ol or Hades in Greek which means grave or abode of the dead to await being cast into the abyss forever.

So how can you avoid the second death and eternal torment and live in paradise forever? Here is Romans 10:9

"Because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. "

If you would like a formal prayer for salvation please ask in the comments.

God has a rule, if you think about heaven for longer than 5 minutes you'll get sent to hell.

I disagree it should inpire to think more about Jesus.

Amen, great read.

Revelations is my favourite book.

It's not a bad thing as a Christian to "want" Judgement Day to happen soon/possibly in my earthly lifetime right? For me I want it because the world is so genuinely evil that I want God to come down from Heaven and make everything right, but at the same time I feel sympathy for all the billions of people who would not be saved, also of course I am scared for myself (and I know that's why Jesus tells us to always be alert and pray often, etc. as He will come like a thief in the night).

Of course not, I want the Lord to return as soon as possible also.

And like in the scripture "soon and very soon, we are going to see the King"

The blessing of this fallen world is that it does not last forever, this world and everything in it will be burnt up.

I’ll get straight to the point. You did talk about soul sleep toward the start, or at least the scriptures you referenced did, which actually affirms my point about soul sleep. If you’re not familiar with that doctrine, you should look into it. I might even make a thread on it one day.

It’s also funny because Martin Luther himself believed in soul sleep as well.

I’m also kind of disappointed you didn’t mention John 3:16, “For those who believe in Him will inherit eternal life.” It’s one of the most popular verses in the Bible, but at the same time one of the most meaningful.

The idea of inheriting eternal life means that yes, like you mentioned in your thread, there will be a new heaven and a new earth, but we don’t actually know what that looks like. Some people debate whether it will be like the Garden of Eden again, but ultimately we don’t know what the new heaven and earth truly means in full context.

All we really know is that by believing in Jesus Christ, we are promised eternal life and eternity with Him.

Interesting post, but it’s presenting one very specific evangelical/protestant reading of Revelation as if it’s the only Christian view, when historically Christianity has never been that unified on the afterlife. The 1000 year reign stuff especially is debated heavily. A lot of Christians, including most Orthodox Christians, don’t read Revelation as a literal end-times timeline with geopolitics and dragons on a stopwatch.

Orthodoxy tends to view heaven and hell less as two separate locations and more as the same experience of God’s presence. God is the all-consuming fire either way. For the saints, that presence is joy and communion; for those who hate God, it’s torment. Same sun, different eyes. Which is both more philosophically coherent and somehow more terrifying than medieval cartoon dungeons with pitchfork interns.

Also, Abraham’s bosom, Hades, Gehenna, the lake of fire, paradise, and the resurrection are all distinct concepts in the Bible and later theology, but modern pop-Christian discussions tend to flatten them into one giant afterlife blender.

The Bible absolutely teaches judgement and resurrection, but the details of how the afterlife works have been interpreted very differently across Christian history.
