Gently drop contact with him. Do it over a prolonged period of time so that it looks like you naturally drifted apart. You can try to bring him back to reason if you want, but it’s usually a lost cause by that point—I wouldn’t bother.

Depends on how close I am to the guy. If just casual friends, I'd cut him off. But if I was close enough to him I'd be able to tell early on if he was headed down that path and try everything I can to stop it. If he STILL decided, then it would be like seeing him die but I'd have to cut him off as well.
