I imagine they are a reaction to r/trueuglymen (idk could be wrong, source is I made it up)
I saw some women who identify as "ugly", and they were actually average and acceptable
some people have poor self images for various reasons, + beauty standards are different in different countries
They think beauty standards are universal, many women who look ok think they don't stand a chance just because they have different features
do remember many will be karma and pity harvesting. These posts don't occur in a vaccuum. Often times posts on reddit will be to purely karma farm, one of the problems of the karma system.
LARP'ing.
