Genki 1 & 2 will cover the basics for you. VERY good books man. You can also stick with the ANKI decks for kanji

However, japanese isn't really good professionally, Mandarin or Korean will help you out more if your looking to work for any state dep

I just love listening to the language. I am pretty sure that I'll learn Korean as well but my primary goal is not to use my language skills for work. I think the most useful language is the language of a culture/ country that interest you. I want to become a polyglot and Japanese is definitely on my list as my 3rd language.
I will read some reviews about the Genki books. Thank you.
