The only proof people will accept is your personal experience. It's the only proof anyone cares about. So instead of saying "These guys in this study experienced such and such," what you instead tell people is "I personally experienced such and such, I feel bad, rate me what can I improve?" In time they'll see that your efforts are real, and that there must be something else to this besides some imagined "lack of trying."
Thats counterintuitive but probably right. They have to care about you though to care about your problems though.
