My mother apologised to me for bringing me into this world on more than one occasion. She realized too late that my father would never give up the booze and be a family man; and that the world is a fucking mess, even after the Cold War ended. She had let herself have some hope that things would get better, despite suffering a lifetime of shit people. I am glad she is no longer suffering, but I miss my folks every day.
