I don't think woman hate beeing approached, if the approach is platonic at first (so kind of just a chat with a stranger), but in at least 9/10 cases this won't lead to any further action either.

I think it also depends on the situation. In a situation where the women is bored but relaxed (for example on the train, alone at some kind of public event, at the park) she is likely to engage in a conversation. Of course parties or bars that are less crowded are also a good opportunity to approach

How long ago did you give up? And in what part of the world was this? I always feel like cold approaching during daylight is the time women are least likely to be reciprocal, that is learned the hard way though, I guess.
