Tfw you never explored Africa during the phase of European imperialism.
Imagine being on an Africa trip with your comrades - exploring a foreign country with a completely different flora and fauna, using your machetes in the jungles, seeing crocodiles, snakes and antilopes, discovering new tribes and building up a small anchorpoint of European civilization while describing numerous different native customs and life forms.
Imagine being on a boat trip with some rich settlers and seeing over the giant rivers full of crocodiles, tiger fish and hippos with your fancy suit and/or parading in your uniform with some good music blasting in the background.
The feeling when you know you are never going to be a tropics doctor who can do research on trypanosomatids/plasmodiids/nematods/etc. and describe new medicaments/diseases. The feeling when all the good work of discovery has been done and everything is nowadays only CS/math under a different name. Despite all the illnesses/diseases this could become the greatest adventure of our life, but what is an adventure without risk?
The feeling when you will never be a Rhodesian or a soldier in the armies of Erwin Rommel. This modern life is completely devoid of any meaning. In the 70s life ultimately ended and humanity lives in hell...
