There used to be a time when people were forced to interact with ugly loser coworkers because they were bored, or there was nobody else around, but now phones exist that scenario doesn't exist. People can always be talking to their girlfriend or boyfriend, they can always be tied in to their social circle, they can always be "just chatting" with people across messaging apps, they can always be swiping on tinder. They can access the news, entertainment, gossip, everything - all on their phone in every situation.
You are always competing with that possibility now, people do not need to spend time getting to know you at work, in a social group, at a hobby. They are not starving for social interaction in any situation, and as such, they don't need to try and talk to you or find out anything about you. You can provide them absolutely nothing they don't already have. They will not waste their time trying to dig out something interesting about you like they might have in the past, they will not ask you any questions, it's on you to demonstrate your value above what they can access from their phone. It's on you to demonstrate why they should treat you like a human being. And naturally, ugly people are already struggling on an uphill battle since our ugliness means demonstration of value is even harder; especially to a hostile audience.
Your best efforts to be nice might just be worth less to them than the message they send to their friend saying "omg lol this guy at work is such a creep!!", that's just the reality.
They don't need us, this isn't a village where we play an actual role that people understand is relevant to their lives. Our economic value in society is not even clear if you don't have a decently skilled job, if you work a shit job you're just a meaningless cog who is "there" at work with them. We're nothing. There is no need for us in any situation, we have to fight every moment to be involved in the social world.
