Only the people that had the urge to procreate and love passed on genes.
It's not that there's point in these actions, it's that the people who didn't find meaning in love and sex died without passing on their apathy.
There is no inherent point to life. Not reproduction, not love, not companionship.
All we have are mechanisms: these mechanisms punish or reward us depending on the stimuli that allowed our ancestors to survive, nothing more. It's up to us to sustainably feed these mechanisms so that we aren't 'punished' by our own biology.
