Putting the witch trials aside, which sex had it worse at any given time seems hard to answer. Most of the time most of the people were poor suckers and fucked in a whole litany of ways. Men were forced into military service, did the more physically demanding work and had to shoulder more responsibilities. Women had less freedom and autonomy, and probably less fun in general I would guess.

I think genetics tell a lot more about historical female liberation than any history books. If a population is tall, physically powerful, aesthetically pleasing, etc, then almost certainly their history involved hypergamy and cuckoldry. If a population is full of subhuman, weak, manlets, then almost certainly they kept their women on a leash. The only way to beat this trend is perhaps eugenics, e.g., a population that keeps their women on a leash but simultaneously encourages traits like intelligence to prevail over height, facial harmony, and aggressiveness (which is all that foids are attracted to on a genetic level).
