Was life any easier in the past?

Obviously, billions of humans have suffered on this earth. There were very many circumstances where living was much harder than today.

But, generally speaking, was it easier in the past?

Maybe today with such a high population and so few resources/jobs to go around, everyone is much more cutthroat?

With the internet and technology, we're expected to always be "on", to always give our best, to do this 1 thing better than everybody else. Either win or lose, anything less than that leads to a life of failure.

Relationships used to mostly last a lifetime. Wages used to afford you a decent life, if you worked you couldn't be poor. Everything just seemed simpler.

Or am I just imagining things? Trying to cope with "muh life is harder today"?

But, generally speaking, was it easier in the past?

It was simpler and more straightforward but, on the other hand, it was more physically-demanding and requiring more personal initiative.
All in all, the period between 1945 and 1975 was paradise on earth and it's the period in which civilization peaked socially. American late silent gens and early boomers lived the best life humans have ever lived.
