Was Europe better off under Monarchist rule?

I am just wondering what your opinions are?

From my ethnic view point Europeans conquered the world when ruled by monarchies and had meritocracy. After ww1/ww2 the ruling elites were changed out . So the current Europe is a product of the current elites.

Do you prefer the current elites and why? Or would you prefer to have absolute monarchies again and why?
