As a Easterner, I can't wrap around the idea of "civic nationalism" the idea that different groups work towards a common state that is made of vastly different people with different values, and different "capabilities".
The idea of a Volk, that is, a people (the word combines the state, the people, and their culture), is politically correct in Asia. The word 民族 (Volk) is used to refer to a group of people.

While not strictly defined as Nazi Germany's volk, who must be European, most of China's 56 ethnicities are of mongoloid stock, with similarly light skin. Even if it is not officially genetically defined, you would be hard pressed to find a person who would call a black or white man "Chinese".
Genetically, the Han group is made up, with different halpogroups; but we look close enough and are culturally similar enough that social cohesion isn't hurt much.
Blood and Soil. It's a concept that a people (blood) is designated a place (soil) to live. That was actually realized in China as "Civilization state".
A civilization state is a state that is viewed by their people as a state that works for their Volk.

If we apply this to Europe, it would be like Germany with France, Netherlands, Poland (and so on) under its wing. With the rest (such as Balkans) being wildcards with their local identities, comparable to Japan and Korea in Asia.
Personally, I admire this system and would be disheartened to see if one day, is replaced with something like what Singapore have; Singapore does not have a culture, and its own Chinese majority/Malay minority are being replaced by pajeets; I guess that's what happen if you're a wannabe democrat USA.
